London is a rich destination that’s full of contrasts: royal but also arty, distinguished but also trendy, cultural as well as historic, fashionable and a clubber’s paradise. A bastion of tradition, the imposing Palace of Westminster towers on the banks of the Thames, rising out of the Victorian mists. Not far away, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London add a serious note to the atmosphere punctuated by the rhythm of Big Ben. Along the river is the London Eye, the big wheel watching over London Bridge and competing with The Shard, the capital’s latest iconic building.

Whether you’re from Outer or Inner London or you’re a visiting tourist, the West End is the ultimate shopping destination. Here you’ll find the main attractions of Oxford Street, Leicester Square and Covent Garden with its market nestled in the shadow of Westminster Abbey, along with Piccadilly Circus and slightly further out, Notting Hill, which are well worth exploring on a famous red double-decker bus or an iconic London black cab. Shoreditch is also worth a visit, popular with trendy Londoners with its explosions of colour and buildings decorated by street artists. This area is a haven for night owls and bohemians. Between Soho and Mayfair, the luxury brands of Bond Street and Regent Street compete with the chic labels of Oxford Street. So there's no need to wait until Fashion Week to give into the temptations of fashion. The legendary department stores of Harrods and Selfridges compete for grandeur, abundance and tempting offers.

History buffs will love the three London sites of the Imperial War Museum, as well as Trafalgar Square or the Victoria and Albert Museum. Anyone interested in Egyptology or Antiquity is in for a treat at the British Museum, an endless fountain of knowledge, and well worth setting aside a least a few hours for. Interested in contemporary art? The short but sweet London Art Fair or the industrial Tate Modern offer a programme combining unmissable masterpieces with the next big thing in the art world.

A million miles away from the clichés and reputation of English food, England is now one of the culinary capitals of the world. It is home to a young generation of more rock'n'roll chefs who aren’t afraid to give in to their wilder side. Daring chefs from around the world are constantly coming up with new concepts. Brett Graham from The Ledbury, Jason Atherton at Pollen Street Social and Mark Hix are just some of the names to watch out for. Fashionable addresses include contemporary Japanese restaurant Zuma and Hakkasan for Chinese cuisine, both boasting branches around the world, as well as specialist coffee shops serving classic cappuccinos and cortados.

You really shouldn’t leave London before you’ve experienced its nightlight and its internationally renowned cocktail bars. Choose from a wide range of atmospheres to suit all sorts of different musical preferences… from the friendly Cargo to the arty Corsica Studios, from the trendy Experimental Cocktail Club to the rather provocative The Box, via the exhilarating Electric Brixton, where everyone dances to the rhythm of the best DJs in town.

Getting around London

Transport

Transportation is very easy to organise in London and includes a wide range of methods of transportation, including: local cabs, private car services, rental car, tube, trains, buses, bikes and river ferries along the Thames.

Transport for London (TfL) operates more than 24 million weekday trips, mainly from 5:00am to 00:30am, including:

London Underground (Tube): 11 colour-coded underground lines and 270 stations.

Buses, 700 routes, 8.000 buses and 19.000 bus stops.

Barclays Cycle Hire, a public bike hire offering 10.000 bikes for hire and 700 docking stations.

London River Services is a great alternative to the tube or buses to discover London via the River Thames.

A single fare on the London Underground costs £2.90 and a bus fare costs £1.50.

Buying an Oyster smart card is the best and cheapest way to travel around London. The Oyster Travelcard comes with a pre-loaded credit value to cover the cost of your travel around the city.

Keep in mind that when driving in London, you must drive on the left side of the road.

Taxis

According to the Transport Department, there are 22.000 taxis in London and more than 67.000 licensed private hire vehicle drivers.

London's black cabs can be hailed on the street, found at taxi ranks or booked in advance through a London taxi company.

The initial charge is £2,40 and each additional 126 meters is £0,20. Some additional charges may apply.

Tip of 10 to 15% are not included.

Credit card and debit cards are usually accepted, with an additional charge.

Getting to & from the airport

There are five major airports in London:

- Heathrow International Airport, where the majority of trans-Atlantic and long haul flights arrive.

- Gatwick and London City for European flights.

- Stansted and Luton, mainly dedicated to low-cost carrier flights.

Metered taxis are available and private transfers can be arranged at the airports.

By cab between Heathrow and London Paddington, expect a 45 minutes journey to cost a minimum of £65 (depending upon traffic and the time of day). The Heathrow Express train takes only 15 minutes from the airport to London's Paddington, costing approximately £21.50 for a one-way ticket. Gatwick Express is also very convenient when travelling between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria, where this 30 minutes journey costs £17.70 for a one-way fare.

In 2018, the Art Fair welcomed around 20,000 visitors to 130 participating galleries around the world, though London remains at the heart of the event. With so much to see in the capital, it can be difficult knowing where to begin. Here, we bring you some of the most highly anticipated events of 2019’s Fair and the locations of some unmissable participating galleries in the city. The 2019 Museum Partner Since 2014, the London Art Fair has selected an annual ‘Museum Partner’ for a collaborative showcase. This year’s partnership is with Towner Art Gallery, in Eastbourne, and will present The Living Collection, an exhibition which focuses on the gallery’s nearly 100-year history of collecting, exhibiting and celebrating contemporary art. This fantastic steakhouse is on Maddox Street, a short walk from Oxford Circus tube station. There are two more Goodman restaurants in London, one in Canary Wharf and one in The City. Collectively, they’ve been voted the best steak restaurants in London. Style wise, it’s a British version of a New York steakhouse, but offers so much more. Lisa Markwell wrote in her review for The Independent “far more refined than just the cave man slab-of-steak thing.” Aside from the steaks, the lobster mac and cheese comes highly recommended. London’s Prince Edward Theatre was designed by Edward A. Stone in 1928 and first opened its doors in 1930. The historic space plays a significant role in the city’s iconic West End, though it has suffered a problematic past, changing hands several times throughout the years. By 1935, the space had been converted from theatre to a hugely successful dance and cabaret hall named ‘London Casino’. By 1941 however, it became severely damaged during the air raids of World War II. In 1954, the theatre was adapted into a cinema, with much of the interior changing to accommodate large projectors and a curved cinematic screen. Iconic films, including A Space Odyssey (1968) and Ben-Hur (1969), were shown in the space, though demand for cinema fell in the 1970s, with the building being converted back into a theatre in 1978. Musical theatre has been favoured here since Evita first ran in 1978. Throughout early 2019 audiences can catch the Prince Edward’s critically acclaimed production of Aladdin, which has been running since June 2016. Mary Poppins launches in Autumn 2019 and promises to be of paralleled success. Situated on Old Compton Street, just north of Leicester Square, the Prince Edward is an ideal choice for visitors looking to explore the legendary West End and its cultural impact on the city. With an architectural exterior which replicates the style of an Italian palace, the appearance of the theatre has remained unchanged since its inception over ninety years ago. Audiences are greeted by an exuberant, warm and welcoming art-deco foyer, which is evocative of the 1930’s era.
